What are the Arts Therapies?

The Arts Therapies is an umbrella term that refers to Art, Music, Drama and Dance/Movement Therapy professions. Also known as Arts Psychotherapists, they are skilled clinicians with a minimum Masters qualification in their chosen profession. They work with a range of clients in the field of mental health. All Arts Psychotherapies at sp(i)eel are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Arts therapy involves the intentional use of arts-based activities in a therapeutic setting, no previous experience or skills in the arts are necessary. An Arts Psychotherapist will offer a safe, non-judgemental space to help you communicate and express yourself, which may include feelings or experiences that are hard to put into words. Each person will have their unique experience of the Arts Therapies, but general aims may include to better know yourself, to make sense of emotions and experiences, to improve mental health and well-being, as well as forming and maintaining positive and healthy relationships.

We have a network of qualified and experienced Arts Psychotherapists that are available for individual and group therapy. They also supervise and offer supportive sessions for arts practitioners, counsellors, social workers and community care workers. Please send us your details via email to info@spieelcollective.co.za, give us a call or fill in the online form on the contact page to reach us for a chat and more information.
